What WoolSafe Certification Means for Your Wool Carpet or Rug

WoolSafe certifies that a cleaning product, and the technician using it, is safe on wool. Here is what it covers, what it does not, and why it is rare in South Africa.

WoolSafe certification is an independent test of whether a cleaning product, and the technician using it, is genuinely safe on wool. A product carrying the mark has been laboratory tested and shown to clean effectively without damaging the fibre, changing its texture, or leaving behind a residue that pulls soil straight back in. A certified technician has been trained and examined on how wool behaves and what it cannot tolerate. On a wool carpet, and even more so on a hand-knotted wool rug, that is the difference between a clean and an expensive mistake.

It matters because most serious wool damage is chemical rather than mechanical. A carpet is rarely ruined by scrubbing. It is ruined by the wrong pH, an oxidising bleach, an enzyme product intended for a synthetic fibre, or heat applied to a fibre that shrinks. All of those happen in minutes and none of them can be reversed afterwards. Certification exists because you cannot tell by looking at a bottle which category it falls into.

Wool is a protein fibre, and that changes everything

Wool is keratin, the same protein family as human hair, and it is built as a shaft covered in overlapping scales. Those scales are why wool is resilient, why it hides soil so well, and why it recovers its shape after being walked on for years. They are also its vulnerability. Open the scales and they interlock with their neighbours, and the fibre mats permanently into a denser, harder surface. That is felting, and it is exactly what happens to a wool jersey in a hot wash.

A handful of things open those scales or attack the protein directly:

  • Alkalinity. Wool is comfortable in a near-neutral range of roughly pH 6.5 to 7.5. General-purpose cleaners, most degreasers and many carpet powders sit far higher than that. Alkaline chemistry swells the fibre, opens the scales, dulls the surface and loosens dyes.
  • Oxidising bleach. Chlorine bleach and oxygen bleach both attack the protein. Oxygen bleach is the more common accident, because it is the active ingredient in most household "oxy" spot cleaners and it does not read as bleach to the person using it. The result is a permanently lightened patch that no clean recovers.
  • Enzymes. Protease enzymes are designed to digest protein soils. Wool is a protein, so an enzyme product left on wool works on the fibre itself.
  • Heat. Heat accelerates every one of the above, sets protein stains and drives shrinkage. It is the reason we use normal-temperature water rather than hot water extraction on wool, silk and dyed pile: the chemistry and the mechanical extraction do the work, and heat mostly adds risk.
  • Moisture, badly managed. Wool holds a great deal of water before it feels wet, and a wool rug with a cotton foundation left damp for too long will brown from the inside as lignin wicks to the surface.

Add hand-dyed yarn to that list and the margin narrows further. On an older Persian or oriental piece the reds in particular were never guaranteed colourfast, which is why every colour is tested before any solution is applied. What WoolSafe actually certifies

Two separate things, and it is worth keeping them apart because they are often blurred.

1. Products

Cleaning products are submitted for independent laboratory testing and assessed on more than whether they clean. The assessment covers the pH of the solution in use, its effect on colourfastness, whether it weakens or changes the texture of the fibre, whether it rinses out cleanly, and whether what remains in the pile afterwards attracts soil. A product only carries the mark if it passes on all of those counts, and approval is specific to that formulation rather than to the brand behind it.

2. People and companies

Separately, cleaning companies and their technicians are trained and examined on wool and natural-fibre care: identifying the fibre in front of them, choosing chemistry for it, controlling moisture, handling dyes, and drying correctly. This is not a one-off certificate that sits on a wall. It is maintained, and it is the part that matters most on the day, because the safest product in the world is still capable of damage in the wrong hands or at the wrong dilution.

What certification does not promise

Being honest about the limits is part of what makes the claim worth anything.

  • It does not remove permanent damage. Sun fading, chemical discolouration, fibre oxidation, moth loss and physical wear are not soil, and no chemistry recovers them. We identify those before we start and tell you in writing.
  • It does not replace testing on the day. Approved chemistry still has to be tested on the specific rug, colour by colour, because dye stability is a property of the rug rather than of the product.
  • It does not cover drying. A rug can be washed with faultless chemistry and still ruined by being dried too fast, unevenly, or lying on a floor. Drying is a separate discipline, covered in our rug drying guide.

Why it is uncommon in South Africa

WoolSafe certification is rare in this country. To the best of our knowledge, there are only two operations in South Africa that hold it: ourselves, and Rugmaster.

The reason is not that wool is rare here. Wool carpet is common in older Johannesburg and Pretoria homes, and hand-knotted wool rugs are widespread across Gauteng, many of them brought back from Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and Pakistan over decades and worth considerably more than the furniture standing on them. The reason is that certification is a standing commitment rather than a purchase: training that has to be maintained, a chemistry cupboard chosen around fibre safety, and a willingness to work to a method that takes longer than the quickest available approach.

What it changes on your rug, in practice

Certification is only meaningful if it shows up in the process, so here is where it actually appears in a wool rug clean:

  1. Fibre and construction identification first. Wool, wool blend, silk, viscose sold as art-silk, cotton or synthetic, and hand-knotted, hand-tufted or machine-made. Everything downstream follows from this. Our guide to identifying your rug type covers how it is done.
  2. Dusting before any water. Dry soil is removed from the foundation first, because water turns loose grit into mud that has to be flushed out rather than lifted.
  3. Colourfastness testing, colour by colour, with the solution we intend to use, not a generic one.
  4. pH-appropriate WoolSafe-certified chemistry, at the dilution the fibre calls for.
  5. Normal-temperature water, deliberately. Heat is the cheapest way to make a cleaning solution work harder and the fastest way to shrink, felt or bleed a wool rug.
  6. A thorough rinse, because detergent left in the pile is a soil magnet and is the usual reason a rug looks worse a month after cleaning than it did before. Our post on why carpets re-soil quickly explains the mechanism.
  7. Centrifuge extraction, spinning the bulk of the water back out before drying begins.
  8. Controlled flat drying in our drying rooms, monitored until the foundation is dry the whole way through. No two rugs dry at the same rate: fibre, pile density, foundation material, age and soil load all move it.
  9. Grooming and a final inspection before the rug is wrapped and returned.

What wool damage looks like when the chemistry is wrong

These are the failure modes worth recognising, because most of them appear after the rug is back on the floor rather than on the day:

  • Felting and matting. The pile feels denser and harder than it did, and no longer recovers when you run a hand through it. This is permanent.
  • Shrinkage. A rug that no longer sits flat, or a fitted wool carpet pulling at the edges. Usually heat, alkalinity and over-wetting together.
  • Browning. A tan or yellow cast that develops as the rug dries, worst at the fringes and along the edges, caused by lignin wicking out of a cotton foundation during slow or uneven drying.
  • Dye migration. Colour bleeding from one area into an adjacent lighter one, often as a halo. Dye travels for as long as there is moisture to travel in, which is why drying control matters as much as chemistry.
  • Spot lightening. A pale patch with a clean edge where a household spot cleaner containing oxygen bleach was used. The dye is chemically gone rather than moved.
  • A harsh or crunchy handle. Residue left in the pile. It also causes the rug to re-soil noticeably faster than before.

What to ask about any wool clean

Whoever you use, these questions separate a considered method from a generic one:

  • What fibre is this, and how did you determine that?
  • What is the pH of what you intend to use on it?
  • Will every colour be dye-tested with that actual solution before you start?
  • Will hot water be used, and if so, why on this fibre?
  • Where will the rug physically be cleaned, and who will be doing it?
  • How will it be dried, and how will you know the foundation is dry?
  • What do you already expect not to be able to remove?

Common questions

What is WoolSafe certification?

It is independent certification that a cleaning product is safe for wool and other natural fibres, and separately that a cleaning company and its technicians are trained to a tested standard in wool care. Products are laboratory assessed on pH, effect on colourfastness and fibre strength, rinsability and residue. It exists because most wool damage is chemical, happens in minutes, and cannot be reversed.

Why does wool need special cleaning chemistry?

Wool is a protein fibre covered in overlapping scales. Alkaline cleaners, oxygen or chlorine bleach, enzyme products and heat all either open those scales or attack the protein directly, causing felting, shrinkage, dye bleed or permanent lightening. Wool is only comfortable in a near-neutral pH range of roughly 6.5 to 7.5, so the chemistry has to be chosen for the fibre rather than for the soil alone.

Can I use an oxy spot cleaner on a wool rug?

No. Oxygen bleach is the active ingredient in most household "oxy" spot products, and on wool it attacks the protein and lightens the dye permanently, leaving a pale patch with a defined edge that no professional clean can restore. Blot spills with a dry white cloth and cool water instead, and leave anything more to a wool-safe treatment.
