Building dust gets into everything

Sanding, cutting tiles and knocking out walls make a very fine dust. It floats through the house, even into rooms nobody worked in, and settles deep in the carpet. A vacuum picks up what is on top, but the fine stuff sinks down to the bottom of the pile. Every time someone walks on it, a little more puffs back into the air.

Building dust is also gritty. Left in a carpet, it rubs against the fibres every time you walk on them, and that wears a carpet out faster. Add the paths of footprints from the front door to the kitchen, and a few drips or scuffs, and a carpet can look years older than it did before the work started.

How it works

    A thorough vacuum pulls out as much dry dust as possible before any water goes near the carpet.

    Marks are treated, then the carpet is deep cleaned and rinsed so the fine dust comes out.

    Carpets are dry in 2–6 hours, and your home finally looks finished.

Why we vacuum before we wet the carpet

Building dust is the reason this job needs a bit more care than a normal clean. If water goes onto a carpet full of fine plaster or cement dust, the dust turns into a paste that is much harder to get out. So we vacuum thoroughly first, with commercial-grade equipment, and only then clean with water.

If you want to vacuum between the builders leaving and our visit, go slowly and use a vacuum with a good filter, and empty it often. Building dust clogs a vacuum quickly.

Paint, plaster and other marks

We will look at every mark before we start and tell you honestly what we expect. Fresh water-based paint and plaster often come out. Paint that has dried hard, oil paint, cement and tile grout can set in the fibres, and some of it may not come out completely. We would rather tell you that up front than surprise you afterwards.

Please don’t scrub dried paint or plaster, and don’t use paint thinners or strong solvents on the carpet. They can spread the mark and damage the carpet. Our guide on how to remove paint from carpet has safe first steps.

Rugs and new carpets

If your rugs stayed in the house during the work, they will be full of dust too. We collect them, dust them out and wash them at our own facility, and most rugs are back in 1 to 2 working days. See rug cleaning.

How do you get building dust out of carpet?
We vacuum the carpet thoroughly first to pull out as much dry dust as possible, because wetting fine building dust turns it into a paste. Then we treat any marks and deep clean and rinse the carpet, which lifts the fine dust out from the bottom of the pile.
When should I book carpet cleaning after renovations?
