Dry Cleaning a Rug, and Which Fibres Actually Need It

Dry cleaning is the right method for viscose, sisal and jute, failing latex and unstable dyes, and the wrong one for almost everything else. What the three processes sold as dry rug cleaning really are, and which fibre needs which.

Dry cleaning a rug means cleaning it with little or no water, and it is the correct method for a genuinely short list of fibres: viscose and everything sold as art silk, plant fibres such as sisal, jute and seagrass, antique pieces whose dyes fail a colourfastness test, hand-tufted rugs whose latex adhesive has begun to break down, and any rug already showing browning or previous dye bleed. For those, low moisture is not a compromise, it is the only safe option.

For everything else, and that includes wool, cotton, kilim, hand-knotted Persian and oriental pieces and every synthetic, dry cleaning is a maintenance method rather than a clean. The soil that actually makes a rug dirty is dry grit sitting in the foundation, kilograms of it in a large wool rug that still looks presentable, and that grit comes out by dusting and washing. No dry method removes it.

Three different things are sold as dry rug cleaning

The phrase covers three processes that behave very differently, which is the main reason people end up with the wrong one.

  • Dry compound cleaning. A slightly moist absorbent compound carrying a little solvent and detergent is brushed into the pile, absorbs soil as it works through the fibre, and is vacuumed out. Fast, no drying time, and it reaches the upper pile only. Some compound stays in the rug, and repeated use builds it up.
  • Solvent cleaning. A dry-cleaning solvent, rather than water, is used as the carrier. It dissolves oily and greasy soil well, does not swell the fibre, and does not carry dye. It also does nothing for water-soluble soil, which is most of what is in a domestic rug, and nothing at all for urine.
  • Low-moisture professional cleaning. Controlled, deliberately minimal moisture applied by hand, with the rug dried fast under managed airflow so that no liquid sits in the fibre long enough to travel. This is what a competent cleaner means when they say they will dry clean your viscose rug, and it is the version that actually protects the piece.

When someone offers to dry clean your rug, the useful question is which of those three they mean, and why they have chosen it for your particular fibre.

Which fibres genuinely need a dry or low-moisture method

Viscose, art silk, bamboo silk, banana silk and rayon

This is the clearest case, and a common one, because a great many rugs sold as silk are viscose. Viscose is regenerated cellulose. Wet it and the fibre swells and loses a large proportion of its strength, so ordinary agitation crushes and breaks the pile. It then dries with a yellow-brown cast, because the cellulose itself discolours, and the sheen that made the rug attractive does not come back. The damage is permanent and it happens with a surprisingly small amount of water, which is why a viscose rug is often ruined by someone dabbing a spill with a wet cloth. Sisal, jute, seagrass and coir

Plant fibres shrink when they get wet and stay shrunk. Jute in particular releases the lignin in its stem, which wicks to the surface as the rug dries and leaves brown staining that is worse than whatever was being cleaned in the first place. Antique and naturally dyed pieces that fail a dye test

Every colour on a hand-knotted or antique rug is tested with the actual solution intended for the wash before any moisture touches the piece. Where a dye moves, the method changes: lower moisture, an acid-side rinse, colours worked separately, or in the worst cases no wet cleaning at all. Hand-tufted rugs with failing latex

A hand-tufted rug is not woven. Its tufts are punched through a backing cloth and held in place by a layer of latex adhesive, with a second backing glued over the top. Latex hardens and crumbles with age, and once it has begun to break down, immersion accelerates it and can release the tufts. It also gives off a strong smell when wet. A rug that sheds a fine grey powder when you rub the back is telling you the latex has gone, and that piece should not be washed. Rugs already showing browning or previous bleed

A rug that already carries a tan cast at the fringes, or a halo where one colour has run into another, has demonstrated what it does when it gets wet. Adding more moisture without correcting the underlying cause usually spreads it. These pieces are assessed before anything is decided, and the correction comes before any wash.

Which fibres do not need it, and are better washed

Steering a rug into dry cleaning when it does not need it is its own mistake, because it leaves the rug dirty while feeling like it has been cleaned.

  • Wool and wool blends. Wool is the fibre that hides soil best. A wool rug that looks fine will give up an alarming quantity of dry grit on the dusting machine before any water is used, and that grit is what cuts the fibre with every footstep. Wool is washed by hand, with pH-appropriate chemistry and controlled flat drying.
  • Polypropylene, olefin, nylon and polyester. Stable, colourfast and hard-wearing. These go through the rug-washing machine, because agitation and volume of water are what lift embedded soil out of a synthetic pile, and the fibre is more than robust enough to take it. Cleaning a synthetic rug dry leaves most of the value on the table.
  • Cotton, kilim and flatweave. Washed by hand after dye testing, with careful moisture control, because a soaked flatweave distorts and dries slowly.
  • Hand-knotted Persian and oriental rugs with stable dyes. Washed by hand, section by section. A properly built hand-knotted rug has been washed many times in its life and is made for it.

What dry cleaning cannot do, on any fibre

  • Pet urine. Urine dries into uric acid salts bonded into the foundation. They need moisture to reactivate and an enzyme with dwell time to break them down. A dry method leaves them there, which is why the smell comes back on the first humid day. See getting pet urine out of a wool rug.
  • Foundation grit. The dry soil compacted into the base of a rug is removed by dusting, mechanically, before washing. Vacuuming a compound out of the pile does not reach it. See what rug dusting is.
  • Deep odour. Odour lives with the organic matter causing it, in the foundation, not on the pile.
  • Set water-soluble staining. Solvent-based methods work on oily soil. Most household staining is not oily.

That is the honest limit of the method, and it is why dry cleaning is the right answer for a specific list of fibres rather than a gentler option for everyone.

How to work out what you have

Fibre first, always. A few practical checks before you phone anyone:

  • Look at the back. A hand-knotted rug shows the pattern on the reverse with visible individual knots. A hand-tufted rug shows a glued-on cloth backing and nothing else. A machine-made rug shows a regular, mechanical grid.
  • Test a few loose fibres, not the rug. Pull two or three fibres from the back of the pile and wet them. Viscose goes weak and breaks easily between your fingers when wet, and dries stiff and slightly tan. Wool stays strong and springs back.
  • Feel the pile. Viscose is cool, very shiny, and flattens into visible shading that will not brush out. Silk is also cool and lustrous but recovers.
  • Rub the back of a tufted rug. Fine grey powder means the latex is degrading.
  • When in doubt, photograph it and ask. Front, back, a corner and any existing marks, in daylight. We would far rather identify a fibre from a photograph than have you find out by wetting it.

Common questions

What does dry cleaning a rug actually mean?

It means cleaning the rug with little or no water, and it covers three different processes. Dry compound cleaning brushes an absorbent compound through the pile and vacuums it out. Solvent cleaning uses a dry-cleaning solvent instead of water as the carrier, which works on oily soil but not on water-soluble soil. Low-moisture professional cleaning uses deliberately minimal moisture applied by hand with fast controlled drying, and that is the version used on delicate fibres. Which rugs should be dry cleaned?

Viscose and everything sold as art silk, bamboo silk, banana silk or rayon; plant fibres such as sisal, jute, seagrass and coir; antique or naturally dyed rugs whose colours fail a colourfastness test; hand-tufted rugs whose latex adhesive has started to crumble; and rugs already showing browning or previous dye bleed. Outside that list, wool, cotton, kilim, hand-knotted and synthetic rugs are all cleaned better and more safely by washing.

Can a viscose rug be washed with water?

No. Viscose is regenerated cellulose, and wet fibre loses much of its strength, so normal agitation crushes and breaks the pile. It then dries with a permanent yellow-brown cast and loses its sheen, and neither is reversible. Even blotting a spill with a wet cloth can leave a visible mark. A viscose rug is cleaned by a controlled low-moisture method, and some marks still cannot be fully removed, because the discolouration is in the fibre itself.

Is dry cleaning gentler on a wool rug?

Gentler is the wrong frame. Wool holds a great deal of dry grit deep in its foundation, and that grit is what abrades the fibre and shortens the rug's life. Dry methods do not reach it. A wool rug is properly served by dusting to remove that grit mechanically, then hand washing with pH-appropriate chemistry and controlled flat drying. Wool tolerates that well when the chemistry and the temperature are right, and it is the treatment that actually preserves the rug.

Does dry cleaning remove pet urine from a rug?

No. Urine dries into uric acid salts bonded into the rug's foundation, and they are not water-soluble on their own. Removing them needs moisture to reactivate them, an enzyme with enough dwell time to break them down, and then flushing to carry the broken-down compounds out. Every dry method leaves the salts in place, so the rug smells clean while it is dry and smells of urine again on the first humid day.

How can I tell if my rug is viscose or real silk?

Pull two or three fibres from the back of the pile and wet them. Viscose becomes weak and breaks easily between your fingers when wet, and dries stiff and slightly tan, while silk stays strong. Viscose also flattens into permanent shading that will not brush out, where silk recovers. Price is a reasonable clue too, since genuine silk rugs are rarely inexpensive.
