The best time to clean the carpets in a new home is before you move in, while the place is empty. It is more hygienic, removing the previous occupants' embedded dust, allergens, pet dander and any accidents you would otherwise be living on, and it is far easier and cheaper to clean carpets with no furniture in the way. Booking a clean for the empty house, before the moving truck arrives, gives you a genuinely fresh start and access to every square metre of floor.

Why clean before you move in

  • Hygiene and a fresh start. You do not know what is in a carpet you did not live on, previous owners' or tenants' dust, dander, pet accidents and allergens are all embedded in the pile. A deep clean resets it before your family settles in, see can dirty carpets make you sick.
  • Allergens. If the previous occupants had pets and you are sensitive, the dander in the carpet matters, see reducing allergens in your home.
  • Access. An empty house means every part of the carpet can be cleaned, including under where furniture will go, with nothing to move around.
  • Speed and cost. Cleaning is quicker and simpler with no furniture, and the carpets are dry and ready before your things arrive.

Timing it right

Book the clean for after the previous occupants have gone and before your furniture arrives, ideally a day or two ahead of the move so the carpets are fully dry. A clean carpet dries in 2 to 6 hours, so an empty house cleaned the day before moving day is dry and ready, see how long carpet takes to dry. If you can, clean before you paint touch-ups settle dust, or vacuum again after any building work.

Moving out, too

The same logic applies at the other end. End-of-lease agreements often require professional carpet cleaning, and an empty rental is the easiest time to do it, leaving the carpets in good condition for your deposit and the next tenant. Keep the invoice as proof for the landlord or agent.

What about old stains in the new place?

A pre-move clean is also the moment to find out what is treatable and what is not. Some marks left by previous occupants are stains that lift out; others are permanent damage, sun fade, old set-in stains or bleach marks, that cleaning cannot fix, see removing old, set-in stains. We assess honestly so you know what you are working with before you furnish the room.
