WoolSafe is an independent certification body for the cleaning of wool and other natural fibres. It does two separate things: it laboratory-tests cleaning products and certifies the ones that are safe on wool, and it trains and registers the technicians and companies that use them. It has been doing this since 1991, and it exists because almost all serious wool damage is chemical, happens in the first few minutes, and cannot be undone by cleaning the carpet again.
That is the short answer. The rest of this article is the detail worth having if you own a wool carpet, a wool-rich broadloom, or a hand-knotted rug, because the word WoolSafe gets attached to three quite different things and only one of them describes a company.
What WoolSafe tests on a product
A cleaning product submitted for approval is not judged on how well it cleans. It is judged on what it does to wool, which is a different question and a harder one to pass. The assessment covers the properties that decide whether a fibre survives contact with it:
- The pH of the solution at working dilution. Not the pH of the concentrate in the bottle, which is the number a label can hide behind, but the pH of the liquid that actually reaches the fibre.
- Effect on colourfastness. Whether the dyes hold, or whether the product starts a dye moving that will not be stopped once it has begun travelling through a damp pile.
- Effect on fibre strength. Wool is protein. Some chemistry degrades it in a way that shows up as a pile that never quite recovers its bounce rather than as an obvious stain.
- Whether it rinses out. A product that will not release from the fibre leaves a residue, and residue is the reason a carpet can look excellent on the day and dirty again within weeks.
- Whether the residue attracts soil. Related but distinct. Some surfactants are actively sticky once dry, so the cleaned area becomes the fastest re-soiling area in the house.
- Optical brighteners. Fluorescent whitening agents cannot be removed once they are in a natural fibre, and they age unevenly, which is why they have no business on wool.
A product that passes carries the WoolSafe Approved mark. It is a mark on a bottle, and it certifies the chemical. It says nothing at all about the person holding the bottle.
The marks, and what each one actually certifies
This is the part that causes the most confusion, and it is worth reading slowly, because the distinction is the whole basis of checking a cleaner properly.
WoolSafe Approved: certifies a product
The laboratory approval described above. Any cleaning company can buy approved products, and many good ones do. A company using them can accurately say it uses WoolSafe-approved chemistry. That is a true and meaningful statement about what goes onto your carpet, and it is not a statement about the company.
WoolSafe Approved Fibre Care Specialist: certifies a person
An individual technician who has completed the Fibre Care Specialist training course and passed the examination. It certifies one human being. A company can employ a qualified specialist without being registered itself, which is a perfectly honest position and one we were in until recently.
WoolSafe Approved Service Provider: certifies a company
The company registration, and the only one of the three that is a statement about the business you are hiring. It requires a qualified Fibre Care Specialist on the team, a documented record of professional carpet cleaning over a period of years, insurance covering work carried out on a client’s property, and a signed declaration naming the approved products the company undertakes to use on wool. It is renewed annually, and every registered company is listed on a public register searchable by country.
Why a body like this exists at all
Wool is a protein fibre wrapped in overlapping scales, and it is only comfortable in a narrow, near-neutral pH band of roughly 6.5 to 7.5. Outside that band things happen quickly and permanently:
- Alkalinity opens the scales. The fibre felts, the pile roughens and loses its spring, and dyes that were stable become mobile. This is the same mechanism that shrinks a wool jersey in a hot wash.
- Oxygen bleach attacks the protein. It is the active ingredient in most household oxy spot removers. On wool it lightens the dye permanently and leaves a pale patch with a hard edge, which no subsequent clean restores.
- Enzyme products digest protein. They do not distinguish between the protein in a pet accident and the protein the carpet is made of.
- Heat accelerates all of it. This is one of the reasons we extract at normal temperature rather than using hot water or steam.
None of this is visible while it is happening. It shows up hours later, as a rug that dried stiff, or a red that has crept into an ivory border, and by then the decision that caused it was made and cannot be unmade. A homeowner has no way of assessing, from the outside, whether the person about to wet an heirloom rug knows what wool does at pH 10. A register is the answer to that problem.
What WoolSafe does not do
Being straight about the limits is part of understanding the value. Certification is about method and fibre safety, not about outcome. It does not promise that a stain will come out. Sun fading, chemical discolouration, fibre oxidation, moth damage and physical wear are permanent regardless of who does the work, and a registered cleaner who tells you otherwise is overselling the badge.
It also does not make an unregistered cleaner incompetent. Plenty of capable technicians have never applied, because registration costs money, requires an examination and, in South Africa, is not something most customers have heard of. The register tells you what has been independently verified. It does not tell you everything that is true.
How to check a claim
A logo on a website is an image file, and anyone can upload one. The register is public and searchable by country, so the check takes about a minute: search the WoolSafe register for the company name. If a company is registered, it is listed. If it is not listed, ask which of the three marks they are showing you, because using approved products or employing a qualified specialist are both legitimate positions, they are just different claims.
Where we stand
The Carpet Guys hold all three: WoolSafe Approved chemistry on every wool and wool-rich piece we clean, a master technician qualified as a Fibre Care Specialist, and company registration as a WoolSafe Approved Service Provider. Before the company registration was issued this website said exactly that it had not been, in those words, because the alternative was to claim something a reader could check and find untrue.
