What you should buy to clean a rug at home is decided by two things: the fibre the rug is made of, and the type of soil you are trying to remove. Those two answers between them rule out most of what is sold as rug shampoo. A single bottle that claims to handle every stain on every rug is the clearest signal to put it back on the shelf, because the chemistry that lifts a coffee ring off polypropylene is not the chemistry that is safe on a wool foundation.
This guide sets out the categories that actually exist behind the branding, what each one is for, which fibres each is safe on, and what to check on a label before you buy. It applies to what is on a South African shelf as much as anywhere else, because the categories are universal even where the brand names are not.
There are only five categories, whatever the label says
Nearly every rug and carpet product sold to consumers is one of these five, or a blend of two. Knowing which one you are holding is most of the skill.
- Detergent spotters (surfactants). The general-purpose category. Surfactants surround greasy and particulate soil so water can carry it away. They work on the widest range of everyday soil, and their weakness is that whatever is not rinsed out stays in the pile and keeps attracting soil.
- Enzyme products. Biological catalysts that break a specific class of soil apart. Protease works on protein (blood, milk, egg, urine), amylase on starch, lipase on fats. They need moisture, time and a temperature they can work at. They are the only category that genuinely resolves pet urine, and they carry one important trap covered below.
- Oxidisers. Hydrogen peroxide and sodium percarbonate, usually sold as "oxy" products. They break the coloured part of an organic stain apart chemically. Very effective on tannin stains on stable synthetics, and a real risk to dyes and to natural fibres.
- Solvents. For oily, greasy and sticky soil that water cannot lift: tar, chewing gum, cosmetics, ink, some adhesives. They dissolve rather than suspend, and they must be used sparingly on a cloth rather than poured on.
- Absorbents and dry compounds. A carrier material that soaks soil up and is then vacuumed out. The only category safe on fibres that must not be wetted at all.
A sixth category, fibre protectors, is not a cleaner. A protector is applied to an already clean rug to make future spills bead rather than soak in, and applying one over soil seals the soil in.
Match the product to the soil, not to the stain's name
"Red wine remover" is marketing. Chemistry does not know what a stain was called before it landed. What matters is what class of soil it is:
- Protein soil (blood, milk, egg, vomit, urine, most food): enzyme product, on a fibre that tolerates one.
- Tannin soil (tea, coffee, red wine, fruit juice, some colas): mildly acidic spotter. Alkaline products set tannin stains rather than lift them, which is why household cleaner often makes a coffee ring worse.
- Oily and greasy soil (cooking oil, cosmetics, body oils, tar): solvent spotter, applied to a cloth.
- Particulate soil (mud, dust, sand, the grey in a traffic lane): vacuum it dry first, and only then use a detergent spotter. Wetting dry soil turns it into mud that pushes deeper into the pile.
- Dye soil (ink, food colouring, another textile bleeding onto the rug): the hardest class, and the one where home attempts most often make things permanent. This is a professional job.
Match the product to the fibre
This is the part that decides whether you still own an intact rug afterwards.
- Wool and wool blends. Neutral to mildly acidic only, roughly pH 5 to 8. No oxidisers, no chlorine bleach, no alkaline cleaner, and no protease enzyme. Wool is a protein fibre, so a protease enzyme sold for pet stains will attack the rug itself alongside the stain. Look for the WoolSafe Approved mark, which exists precisely to tell you a product has been tested as safe on wool.
- Natural silk. Everything in the wool rule, more strictly, plus no heat and the least moisture you can manage. Silk is protein too.
- Viscose, art silk, bamboo silk, banana silk, rayon. Almost nothing, and no water. Water alone permanently discolours and weakens this fibre. Blot spills dry, use an absorbent, and get professional advice before anything else. See how to clean a viscose rug.
- Cotton and cotton flatweave. Tolerates more than wool chemically, but browns readily if it stays damp, so whatever you use must dry fast.
- Sisal, jute, seagrass and coir. Dry products only. These shrink and stain when wet, and jute releases a brown discolouration from inside the fibre. See cleaning a sisal, jute or seagrass rug.
- Polypropylene, olefin, nylon and polyester. The forgiving group. These tolerate the widest range of products, including oxidisers on most solid colours. They are also oil-loving, so oily soil is their characteristic problem rather than dye damage.

What to check on the label before you buy
- A stated pH, or a WoolSafe Approved mark. A product that will not tell you its pH is asking you to guess on the one variable that damages wool and silk permanently.
- No optical brighteners. These are fluorescent whitening agents. They make a fibre look brighter under daylight by fluorescing rather than by cleaning it, they cannot be removed once in the pile, and they discolour unevenly as they age. This is the main reason never to use laundry detergent on a rug.
- Dilution instructions. A product sold ready-to-use at an unstated strength cannot be adjusted to the fibre.
- A safety data sheet available on request. Any manufacturer that takes its own chemistry seriously will provide one.
- Rinse or residue guidance. Surfactant left in a pile attracts soil, so a product that says nothing about rinsing has not thought about what happens three weeks later.

Two practical notes. The second is that because it is a full professional range it spans the whole pH scale, so "use Prochem" is not on its own a wool instruction. What to skip
- Laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid. Both are heavily loaded with surfactant designed to be rinsed out by a machine, and laundry detergent usually carries optical brighteners. On a rug that cannot be rinsed properly, they leave a residue that has the area re-soiling faster than before, often visibly within a month.
- Chlorine bleach and ammonia. Bleach strips dye permanently and destroys wool. Ammonia is strongly alkaline, damages wool, and smells enough like urine to encourage a pet to re-mark the same spot. Never mix either with anything.
- Oxygen or "oxy" products on wool, silk or any hand-knotted rug. They lift the stain and the dye together, and on protein fibre they damage the fibre itself.
- The vinegar and bicarbonate of soda combination. Vinegar is far more acidic than any professional rinse and does nothing to uric acid crystals, which is the job it is most often recommended for. Bicarb is mildly abrasive, extremely difficult to vacuum out of a deep pile, and leaves a residue that holds moisture.
- Carpet deodorising powders. They mask odour rather than remove its source, and the powder settles into the base of the pile where a domestic vacuum cannot retrieve it.
- Anything applied without testing. Every product, including a good one, gets tested on a hidden corner first.
What "eco-friendly" does and does not tell you
There is no legal definition of eco-friendly on a cleaning label in South Africa, so on its own the phrase guarantees nothing about either safety or effectiveness. It is worth being precise about two things people conflate.
The first is that natural does not mean gentle. Vinegar is natural and it is an acid strong enough to affect dyes. Bicarbonate of soda is natural and it is abrasive. Citrus solvents are natural and they are solvents. The second is that a plant-derived surfactant leaves residue in a pile exactly the same way a petrochemical one does, because the residue problem is physical rather than a question of origin.
What is genuinely worth looking for, if low environmental impact matters to you, is the specific and verifiable rather than the general: full ingredient disclosure, a safety data sheet, no optical brighteners, no solvents you can smell across a room, a stated pH, biodegradability stated against a named test rather than as a claim, and a WoolSafe Approved mark if the rug is wool. How to use whatever you buy
- Vacuum first. Dry soil comes out dry. Wetting it makes mud.
- Test on a hidden corner. Apply, leave it the full dwell time, blot with a white cloth, and check the cloth for colour. If any dye transfers, stop.
- Work from the outside inward. Starting in the middle spreads the stain outward into clean fibre.
- Blot, never rub. Rubbing distorts the pile permanently and drives soil deeper.
- Use less than you think. The most common home mistake is soaking the area, which carries the stain into the foundation where you cannot reach it.
- Rinse and dry fast. Blot with clean water, blot dry, then put airflow on the area. A rug that stays damp browns, smells and can grow mould.
What no home product will fix
Being clear about this saves both money and rugs.
- The grit compacted into the foundation. A rug that looks fine can hold kilograms of dry soil below the pile, and it is what cuts the fibre with every footstep. It comes out on a dusting machine, not out of a bottle. See what rug dusting is.
- Urine that has reached the foundation. Surface treatment reaches the surface. The salts causing the smell are underneath.
- Dye bleed, browning, sun fade and fibre oxidation. These are changes to the fibre or the dye rather than soil sitting on it, and no cleaner reverses them.

Is vinegar and bicarbonate of soda safe on a rug?

Can I use an oxy or oxygen stain remover on a rug?
On a solid-colour synthetic rug, often yes, and it is effective on tannin stains such as tea, coffee and red wine. On wool, silk or any hand-knotted or naturally dyed rug, no. Oxidisers break apart the coloured part of a stain, and they cannot distinguish between the stain's colour and the rug's dye, so they commonly lift both. How do I test a rug cleaning product safely?
Pick a hidden area, a corner under furniture or the edge that sits against a wall. Apply the product exactly as the label instructs, including the full dwell time. Press a clean white cloth firmly onto the treated spot and lift it. If any colour has transferred to the cloth, the dyes are not fast and you should not use that product on the rug. Check the same spot again once dry, in daylight, for texture change or lightening.
