A genuine silk rug should be hand-washed by a specialist, not wet-cleaned at home. Safe home care for silk is limited to gentle vacuuming, immediate blotting of spills with a dry cloth, and keeping the rug out of sun and damp. Silk is a delicate protein fibre that is easily and permanently damaged by heat, agitation, alkaline or enzyme cleaners and over-wetting, so the honest advice is to do very little yourself and let a professional handle any real clean. Why silk is the most delicate rug fibre
Silk is a natural protein filament, prized for its sheen and fineness, and both qualities are fragile. The fibre loses strength when wet, so scrubbing or agitating a damp silk rug can distort or break the pile. Its dyes are often not colour-fast and bleed easily. Heat damages it. And because silk is a protein, an enzyme cleaner, the kind sold for pet stains, will actually digest the fibre itself if it is left to work. A method that a wool or synthetic rug would shrug off can ruin a silk rug in minutes, which is why silk is treated with more caution than any other rug fibre.
A note on what you actually own: many rugs sold as "silk" are in fact viscose, also called art silk, bamboo silk or banana silk, which is a wood-pulp fibre that behaves completely differently and is even more water-sensitive. Safe home care for a silk rug
- Vacuum gently, in the direction of the pile. Use suction only, no rotating beater bar, on the lowest setting, and follow the pile direction so you do not snag the fine fibres. A canister vacuum with the floor tool, or even a soft brush attachment, is ideal.
- Rotate regularly and keep it out of direct sun. Silk fades faster than almost any other fibre, so a bright, sun-facing spot is the worst place for a silk rug.
- Use a rug pad, both to protect the delicate foundation from crushing and to stop slipping.
- Keep it dry. Silk and damp do not mix, so keep silk rugs away from bathrooms, kitchens and any area that gets wet.
How to handle a spill on silk
Blot, and little else. Press a dry white cloth or paper towel onto the spill and lift straight up to absorb as much as possible, working from the outside in, without rubbing. You can dab very lightly with a barely damp cloth of plain cool water to dilute a fresh spill, but do not wet the rug, do not apply any cleaning product, and do not use heat to dry it. For anything more than a small, fresh, water-based spill, stop and call a professional. What never to do to a silk rug
- Never wet-wash, shampoo or steam it. Water weakens the fibre and bleeds the dyes, and heat is destructive.
- Never use enzyme cleaners (including pet-stain products), which break down the protein fibre.
- Never use bleach, oxygen "oxy" cleaners, vinegar, bicarb or any household detergent. All of them risk the dyes and the fibre.
- Never scrub or brush hard, and never rub a stain. Wet silk is at its most fragile.
- Never dry it in the sun or with a heater or hairdryer on a warm setting. Cool air only, laid flat.
How a silk rug is cleaned properly
Professional silk cleaning is a careful, hand-controlled process: the fibre is identified, the dyes are tested for fastness before any moisture touches the rug, a pH-neutral, silk-appropriate solution is worked through the pile with the absolute minimum of contact and always in the pile direction, and the rug is dried flat at normal room temperature with no heat. There is no machine agitation and no hot water at any stage.
