Over-wetting is the most common way a carpet is damaged during cleaning, and the damage it causes is largely permanent. It happens when more water goes into the carpet than is pulled back out, so moisture passes through the pile and the primary backing and reaches the secondary backing, the adhesive between them, and the underlay beneath. Everything that goes wrong from there follows from water being somewhere it was never meant to be.
The tell is simple and worth knowing: a correctly cleaned fitted carpet is dry and ready to walk on in 2 to 6 hours. A carpet that is still noticeably damp the next morning was over-wetted, and the clock on the consequences started when the wand was lifted.
How a carpet is built, and why that matters
Most fitted broadloom is a sandwich. Pile yarn is tufted through a primary backing, then a secondary backing is bonded to the underside with a latex adhesive to lock the tufts in and give the carpet dimensional stability. Under that sits the underlay, and under that the floor.
Cleaning is supposed to happen in the top layer, the pile. Chemistry goes onto the fibre, dwells, and is extracted with the soil it has released. The moment water gets past the primary backing it stops being a cleaning process and becomes a wetting event, because everything below the pile is made of materials that do not tolerate saturation.
Delamination
Delamination is the secondary backing separating from the primary backing, because the latex adhesive holding them together has been broken down by water. Latex is not waterproof. Repeated or prolonged saturation degrades it, and once the bond fails the two layers move independently.
What you see is rippling, bubbling or loose areas that were flat before, most often in traffic lanes and near doorways where the carpet flexes most. Push down on it and it feels spongy and disconnected, as though the top layer is floating. In advanced cases the layers can be separated by hand at a seam or edge.
Delamination is not repairable in any meaningful sense. The affected section can be cut out and replaced if there is matching carpet, and otherwise the carpet is at the end of its life in that area. Shrinkage
Natural fibres shrink when they get wet and dry again. Where that matters most is not the pile, it is the backing: a great deal of carpet uses jute or another natural fibre in the secondary backing, and jute shrinks substantially and irreversibly.
A shrinking backing pulls the whole carpet inward from its perimeter. The carpet lifts off the gripper rods at the skirting, and you get a gap along the wall, buckling and ripples across the floor, and in bad cases the carpet visibly pulling away from doorways. Once the carpet has come off the gripper the only remedy is professional restretching, and if the shrinkage is severe there is simply not enough carpet left to reach the walls.
Wool pile shrinks and felts too, through a separate mechanism: wool fibres have overlapping scales that ratchet together irreversibly under the combination of moisture, heat, alkalinity and agitation. Felted wool is stiff, matted and permanently changed. This is one of the main reasons we extract at normal water temperature rather than hot, and why chemistry is kept in the correct pH range for the fibre. Mould and odour in the layers underneath
Underlay is absorbent and it is the last thing to dry. Water that reaches it is held against a floor with no airflow, in the dark, at room temperature, which is close to ideal for microbial growth. The generally accepted window before mould becomes a serious risk in wetted material is 24 to 48 hours.
The result is a persistent musty smell that comes back on humid days and cannot be fixed by cleaning the carpet again, because the source is beneath it. Wicking and browning
Two more consequences that show up days later.
Wicking is soil and old stains travelling back up to the surface as the carpet dries. Water that reached the backing dissolves whatever is down there, and as it evaporates upward it carries that material to the tips of the pile, so a stain you watched disappear reappears a day or two later. This is why stains that "come back" are usually an over-wetting symptom. Our post on why stains come back covers it.
Cellulosic browning is the same mechanism acting on a jute backing: natural lignin and tannin compounds dissolve in water and wick to the surface, leaving diffuse tan or yellow-brown patches, usually worst where drying was slowest. It is treatable with an acid-side browning treatment and much better prevented by not over-wetting in the first place.
What correct moisture control looks like
The whole job is putting down enough water to release soil and recovering essentially all of it. In practice that means:
- Dry soil removed first. Thorough pre-vacuuming means less water is needed to do the same job, because the water is not being asked to move dry grit. Our post on pre-vacuuming covers this.
- Chemistry given dwell time. Letting a pre-spray work means soil is already released before extraction, so extraction is recovering rather than scrubbing.
- Dry passes. Extraction strokes with no solution applied, pulling residual moisture out. This is the single biggest determinant of dry time and it is invisible to the customer.
- Normal-temperature water. Avoids shrinking natural fibres, felting wool, mobilising dye and setting protein stains.
- Airflow afterwards. Air movers to bring dry time down into the 2 to 6 hour range rather than leaving it to the room.
How to tell it has happened, and what to do
Signs, roughly in the order they appear: the carpet is still damp to the touch more than 8 hours afterwards; there is a distinct smell within a day or two; stains reappear after two or three days; tan patches appear that were not there before; the carpet feels spongy or loose underfoot in places; there is a gap along the skirting or visible ripples across the floor.
If you suspect it, act immediately, because the mould window is short. Get maximum airflow onto the area at once with fans and open windows, lift furniture off the carpet and put foil or plastic under the feet so metal and timber do not stain the wet pile, and if it is more than lightly damp call someone with proper extraction and drying equipment rather than waiting to see. Photograph everything with dates, both for a warranty claim and for any conversation with the cleaner. Then raise it with whoever did the work. A clean that leaves a carpet soaked is a workmanship problem and it should be treated as one.
