How to Clean Dining Chair Upholstery & Fabric Seats

Dining chairs take daily food and drink spills. Here is how to clean fabric dining and office chair seats safely, by stain type and cleaning code.

Fabric dining and office chair seats take more food, drink and daily wear than almost any other upholstery in the house, so they need spot-cleaning by stain type and a regular deep clean. The approach is the same as any upholstery: find the cleaning code first, vacuum, spot-test, treat the stain with the right method, and keep moisture low so the padding does not stay damp. Done right, a tired set of dining chairs comes back to life; done with the wrong product or too much water, you get rings and set-in marks.

Start with the cleaning code

Look for a small tag under the seat or on the base with a letter: W (water-safe), S (solvent only), W/S (either), or X (vacuum only). That letter decides what is safe. No code, or an S or X, means keep water off it and treat the chair as delicate. The full breakdown is in how to clean a fabric sofa and what the W, S, W/S and X codes mean.

Treating the stains dining chairs actually get

  • Grease and food (oil, butter, gravy). Oily marks do not dissolve in water, so scrubbing with water and soap just spreads them. Blot up what you can, then use a solvent-side treatment, this is where home attempts most often fail, so it is worth leaving grease to a professional. See blood, grease and protein stains.
  • Wine, juice, tea and coffee (tannin). Act fast, blot with a white cloth and cool water, and never use heat, which sets the stain. The chemistry is covered in tannin stains.
  • Protein (egg, dairy, sauces with milk). Cool water only, never hot, because heat cooks protein and locks it in.

In every case, work from the outside of the stain inward, lift rather than rub, and use the least moisture possible. And skip the vinegar-and-baking-soda routine, it is not the all-purpose upholstery fix it is made out to be, as we explain in is vinegar and baking soda safe on upholstery.

A simple routine for fabric seats

  1. Vacuum each seat with an upholstery tool, including the crevices where crumbs gather.
  2. Spot-test any product in a hidden spot.
  3. Treat stains by type, as above, with minimal moisture applied to a cloth.
  4. Dry quickly with airflow before anyone sits down again.

Crumbs and food residue also feed dust mites, so seats that are used daily benefit from a periodic professional clean as much as a couch does.

When to have them done professionally

For set-in marks, an "S" or "X" fabric, natural-fibre seats, or a full set that has dulled with use, a professional clean is quick and inexpensive: dining and office chairs are R149 each, fully treated, with stain and odour treatment included, see upholstery cleaning costs in Johannesburg. We identify the fabric, test it, and use controlled low moisture so the padding dries quickly rather than staying damp.

Common questions

How do you clean fabric dining chairs?

Check the cleaning code, vacuum the seats, spot-test, then treat stains by type, solvent for grease, cool water for tannin and protein, using minimal moisture on a cloth and drying quickly. Keep water off any seat coded S or X or with no code.

How do I get a grease stain out of a chair seat?

Blot up the excess first, then use a solvent-side treatment rather than water and soap, which only spreads oil. Grease is the stain home methods most often fail on, so for anything beyond a small fresh mark it is worth having it done professionally.

How much does it cost to clean dining chairs?
