To remove ink from carpet, blot, never rub, and lift it with an alcohol-based solvent: dab surgical spirits onto a white cloth, press it onto the ink, and blot from the outside in so the ink transfers to the cloth rather than spreading. Move to a clean part of the cloth as it picks up colour, repeat until no more lifts, then rinse with a little water and dry. Speed and patience both matter, and some permanent-marker inks cannot be fully removed.
Step by step
- Blot up any wet ink first with a dry white cloth. Do not rub, rubbing spreads ink into a larger stain.
- Apply surgical spirits (isopropyl alcohol) to a white cloth, not directly to the carpet, so you control how much goes on.
- Press and blot from the outside of the stain inward, lifting the ink onto the cloth. Working inward stops the stain spreading outward.
- Turn to a clean section of cloth each time it picks up ink, and repeat. This is the step most people cut short.
- Rinse with a little water on a fresh cloth to remove the solvent, then blot dry with airflow.
Different inks behave differently
- Ballpoint pen is oil-based and usually responds well to surgical spirits and patient blotting.
- Water-based and gel ink often lifts with the same alcohol method, sometimes with a little upholstery-safe detergent solution afterwards.
- Permanent marker is the hardest. It may lighten with repeated alcohol blotting, but it is designed not to come off and is sometimes permanent.
Hairspray is an old ink-removal trick because it used to be high in alcohol, surgical spirits does the same job more reliably and without the added stickiness, so it is the better choice.
The rules that protect your carpet
- Always spot-test the solvent in a hidden area first, especially on wool or coloured carpet, where alcohol can affect the dye.
- Blot, never rub or scrub.
- Do not over-wet, work in light dabs and rinse with minimal water.
- Be patient, several light passes beat one aggressive one.
Common questions
How do you get ink out of carpet?
Blot up wet ink, then dab surgical spirits onto a white cloth and press it onto the stain, blotting from the outside in so the ink transfers to the cloth. Move to a clean part of the cloth and repeat until no more lifts, then rinse with a little water and dry. Never rub, it spreads the ink.
Does surgical spirits remove ink from carpet?
Yes, for most ballpoint, gel and water-based inks. The alcohol dissolves the ink so it can be blotted onto a cloth. Apply it to the cloth rather than the carpet, work from the outside in, and spot-test first on wool or coloured carpet.
Can permanent marker be removed from carpet?
Sometimes only partially. Permanent marker is made not to come off, so it may lighten with repeated alcohol blotting but can be permanent. Treating it quickly gives the best chance, and a professional assessment will tell you honestly what is achievable.
