How to Remove Fake Tan From Carpet and Mattresses

Act fast, the DHA keeps developing. Here is how to remove fake tan and self-tanner stains from carpet, mattresses and upholstery before the colour sets.

Fake tan is a deceptive stain. The brown you see on impact is a cosmetic guide colour that washes out fairly easily, but the active ingredient, DHA (dihydroxyacetone), reacts with proteins to develop a deeper colour over the hours after contact, exactly as it does on skin. That is why a fake-tan mark on carpet or a mattress can look worse the next morning than it did when it happened. Act quickly while it is fresh, treat both the oily base and the colour, and be realistic that developed DHA staining on a light carpet can be stubborn.

Why fake tan keeps developing

Self-tanner is built to colour a surface gradually. The DHA continues to react and darken for several hours, so the longer it sits, the more set-in the colour becomes. The product also contains oils and emollients that carry the colour into the fibre and resist plain water, much like a grease stain. The combination of a developing dye and an oily carrier is what makes fake tan harder than an ordinary spill, and why speed is everything.

Step 1: blot the fresh excess

Blot up as much of the wet product as possible with a white cloth or paper towel, lifting rather than rubbing so you do not spread it. The more you remove before the DHA develops, the less colour you will have to deal with. Do not wet it heavily yet, get the bulk off first.

Step 2: tackle the oily base

Mix a few drops of clear, mild dishwashing liquid into warm water, dampen a white cloth and dab the area from the outside in, turning to a clean section as colour transfers. The detergent breaks down the oily carrier and lifts much of the guide colour. Rinse by blotting with clean water and repeat. For a greasy residue, a short bicarbonate-of-soda absorption step beforehand helps draw the oil out.

Step 3: address the developed colour

Any brown that remains after the oil is gone is developed DHA colour. On a white or colourfast light carpet, a solution of white vinegar in water can help lift it, dab, do not soak, and rinse afterwards. Avoid vinegar on wool, which is acid-sensitive and easily damaged, see products that damage carpet. Patience and repeated gentle passes work better than one harsh attempt, and remember the colour will not "wash out" the way the guide tint does.

Fake tan on a mattress or upholstery

Fake tan on bedding and mattresses is extremely common. Treat a mattress the same way, blot, degrease, address the colour, but use minimal moisture and let it dry thoroughly with airflow, because a mattress cannot be rinsed out and damp padding invites odour. On upholstery, check the fabric code first, see the W, S, WS and X fabric codes explained, and never use water on an "S" or "X" fabric. We clean fabric and microfibre upholstery and mattresses, not leather or genuine suede.

What not to do

  • Do not wait. The DHA keeps developing; the colour sets harder by the hour.
  • Do not rub. Rubbing spreads the tan and works it deeper into the pile.
  • Do not use vinegar on wool or any acid-sensitive fibre; spot-test first on anything you are unsure of.
  • Do not soak a mattress; use minimal moisture and dry it fully to avoid odour.

When to call a professional

If the tan has developed and set, covers a large area, or is on a wool or light-coloured carpet where the remaining colour shows, professional treatment is the best option, see removing set-in stains. A professional can match the right chemistry to the fibre and extract safely, though as with any dye stain, an honest assessment up front of what is realistically removable matters.

Common questions

How do you get fake tan out of carpet?

Blot the fresh product off fast, then dab with a mild dishwashing-liquid solution to break down the oily base and lift the guide colour, working from the outside in. Any brown left afterwards is developed DHA, which a white-vinegar solution can help on colourfast light carpet, but not on wool. Speed matters because the colour keeps developing.

Why does fake tan stain get darker over time?

Because its active ingredient, DHA, reacts with proteins to develop colour over several hours, the same way it tans skin. The brown you see at first is mostly a guide tint; the lasting colour deepens as the DHA reacts, which is why a mark left overnight is harder to remove than one treated immediately.

Does fake tan come out of carpet and mattresses?

Fresh fake tan usually lifts well if you act quickly and treat both the oil and the colour. Developed, set-in DHA staining on light carpet or a mattress is more stubborn and may not come out fully at home. Minimal-moisture treatment and, where needed, professional cleaning give the best result.
