How to Clean Fabric and Roman Blinds

Dust fabric and Roman blinds and spot-clean marks without soaking them. Here is how to clean fabric blinds in place, and when to leave it to a professional.

You can keep fabric and Roman blinds clean without taking them down by dusting them regularly on both sides and spot-cleaning marks with minimal moisture, but a full deep clean is best left to a professional, because soaking fabric blinds risks shrinkage, water marks and damage to the linings and cords. The day-to-day routine is simple: dust often, treat spots gently, and never over-wet the fabric. That keeps them looking good between the deeper cleans that fabric blinds occasionally need.

Regular dusting, in place

  • Close the blind so the fabric is flat and fully exposed, then dust top to bottom with a feather duster, a microfibre cloth or, best of all, a vacuum on a low setting with the soft brush attachment.
  • Do both sides, and pay attention to the top edge and folds of a Roman blind, where dust settles.
  • Dust fortnightly, or weekly in dusty rooms and kitchens, to stop grime building into the weave.

Spot-cleaning marks

For a spot or light stain, test a hidden corner first, then dab, do not rub, with a barely-damp cloth and a little mild upholstery-safe solution. Blot the area and let it air-dry. Use the least moisture possible: fabric blinds water-mark exactly like upholstery, where the water carries dissolved soil to the edge of the wet patch and dries as a ring, see removing water rings from upholstery. Roman blinds also have linings and a cord mechanism that should not get wet.

Why a deep clean is a professional job

Fabric and Roman blinds are made of dyed fabric, often with a separate lining and an internal cord and batten system, and they were not built to be soaked. Submerging or heavily wetting them risks shrinkage, water-marking, dye movement and warped battens. A professional clean uses controlled low moisture matched to the fabric so the blind is cleaned thoroughly without being saturated. Common questions

How do you clean fabric blinds without taking them down?

Close the blind, then dust both sides top to bottom with a vacuum brush attachment or microfibre cloth, and spot-clean marks by dabbing gently with a barely-damp cloth and a little mild solution after testing a hidden area. Keep moisture minimal to avoid water marks, and leave a full deep clean to a professional.

Can you wash Roman blinds?

Not by soaking them. Roman blinds have linings, cords and battens that water damages, and the fabric can shrink and water-mark. Dust and spot-clean them in place, and have them professionally cleaned with controlled low moisture when they need a deeper clean.

How do you get a stain out of a fabric blind?

Test a hidden spot, then dab the stain with a barely-damp cloth and a little mild upholstery-safe solution, blotting rather than rubbing, and let it air-dry. Use as little moisture as possible. For a stubborn or large mark, professional cleaning avoids the water-marking risk of doing it yourself.
