Have an area rug professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months, and more often, every 6 to 12 months, if it sits in a high-traffic area or you have pets, young children or allergies. Between professional cleans, vacuum it weekly, rotate it every few months, and deal with spills the moment they happen. The right interval depends on where the rug lives and what it puts up with, and this guide works through those factors so you can set the schedule that suits your rug.
The baseline, and what changes it
For an average rug in an average home, a professional clean every 12 to 18 months keeps it in good condition and stops embedded grit from wearing the fibres down. Several things shorten that interval:
- Foot traffic. A rug in an entrance hall, living room or hallway loads up with soil far faster than one in a guest bedroom. High-traffic rugs benefit from a clean every 6 to 12 months.
- Pets. Dander, hair, the oils from paws and the occasional accident all build up. Pet households should aim for every 6 to 12 months, and treat any urine accident immediately rather than waiting for the next clean.
- Young children. More spills, more time spent on the floor, and a lower tolerance for trapped allergens all argue for more frequent cleaning.
- Allergies and asthma. A rug traps dust, pollen and dust-mite waste. That is useful only if the trap is regularly emptied, so allergy households should lean toward the shorter end of the range.
- Sunlight. A rug in direct sun is not soiled faster, but UV fades dyes over time, which is one reason to rotate it (below).
How to tell a rug is due
Beyond the calendar, your rug will tell you. Lift a corner and tap the back, or fold a section pile-to-pile: if grit falls out or the base of the pile looks dull and grey compared with a protected edge under furniture, there is embedded soil a vacuum is not reaching. A flattened look in the traffic path, a faint stale smell, or colours that seem muted are all signs it is time. A rug that has had a urine accident or a soaked spill should be treated promptly, not left for the schedule.
Caring for your rug between professional cleans
- Vacuum weekly, twice a week in high-traffic or pet homes. Avoid a hard-spinning beater bar on wool, shaggy or delicate rugs and on fringes, which it can pull and tear, use suction or a gentle setting instead.
- Rotate the rug every three to six months so wear and any sun fade spread evenly rather than concentrating in one path.
- Use a rug pad to reduce slipping, cushion foot traffic and let air move underneath.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth, lift, do not rub, and do not soak the rug. On wool, silk or viscose, skip the supermarket carpet sprays, the pH is usually wrong, and call a professional for anything beyond a small fresh spot.
- Vacuum the floor underneath when you rotate, since grit collects there too.
Why rugs are not on the same schedule as fitted carpet
An area rug is portable, often double-sided in terms of soil (the floor beneath collects grit too), and frequently made of natural fibres that need gentler, less frequent wet cleaning than a synthetic fitted carpet. Wool and hand-knotted rugs in particular reward careful, correctly-timed cleaning over frequent aggressive washing, see our Persian and oriental rug care guide and guide to cleaning wool. Anything sold as silk or viscose needs particular care, as we explain in the dangers of cleaning silk and viscose rugs.
Common questions
How often should I clean a wool or Persian rug?
Every 12 to 18 months professionally for normal use, with weekly gentle vacuuming and prompt spill treatment in between. Hand-knotted and wool rugs are cleaned by hand, never machine-scrubbed.
Can I clean my area rug myself between professional cleans?
You can vacuum it and blot fresh spills with a white cloth and a little water. Avoid soaking it, avoid heat, and avoid household carpet products on wool, silk or viscose, where the wrong chemistry causes browning and dye bleed.
How much does professional rug cleaning cost?
