What Is the Correct Way to Vacuum Carpet?

Go slowly, overlap passes in two directions, set the right height, and empty the bag often. Here is the correct way to vacuum carpet for a deeper clean.

The correct way to vacuum carpet is to go slowly, make several overlapping passes in more than one direction, set the height to suit the pile, and empty the bag or bin before it is half full. The single biggest mistake people make is rushing: a quick pass leaves most of the grit behind, because the vacuum needs time for the airflow and brush to lift soil out of the pile. Slow, methodical vacuuming removes far more than fast vacuuming, with the same machine.

How to do it properly

  1. Go slowly. Move the vacuum at a steady, unhurried pace, especially on the pull stroke, which does most of the work. Rushing is why a carpet still looks dull after vacuuming.
  2. Make multiple passes, overlapping each stroke, and go over high-traffic areas several times.
  3. Vacuum in more than one direction. A second pass at right angles to the first lifts soil the first direction missed and stands the pile up.
  4. Set the right height. The head should be high enough to move easily but low enough to grip, too low strains the motor and can damage the pile; too high and it does not reach the soil.
  5. Use the edge and crevice tools along skirting boards and in corners, where a lot of soil collects.

Keep the machine working well

  • Empty the bag or bin before it is half full. A full bag kills suction, and suction is what lifts the soil.
  • Clean or replace the filter regularly, a clogged filter, especially HEPA, reduces airflow and lets fine dust back into the room.
  • Check the brush roll for tangled hair and threads, which stop it agitating the pile.

Match the technique to the pile

Cut-pile carpet takes a normal beater-bar setting well. Loop-pile (Berber) and delicate or high-pile carpet need more care, an aggressive spinning brush can snag and fuzz the loops, so use suction or a gentle setting, see what carpet pile is and why it matters. The same applies to shaggy rugs, see cleaning a shaggy rug.

Common questions

What is the correct way to vacuum carpet?

Go slowly, make several overlapping passes in more than one direction, set the head height to suit the pile, use the edge tools along skirtings, and empty the bag or bin before it is half full. Slow, methodical vacuuming removes far more grit than a quick once-over with the same machine.

Why is slow vacuuming better?

Because the vacuum needs time for its airflow and brush to lift soil out of the pile. A fast pass skims the surface and leaves most of the embedded grit behind, while a slow, steady pull stroke draws it out. Speed, more than the machine, is what determines how much you actually remove.

Should you vacuum in different directions?

Yes. Vacuuming in more than one direction, ideally a second pass at right angles to the first, lifts soil the first direction missed and stands the pile up for a cleaner, more even result. It is especially worthwhile in high-traffic areas where soil is compacted.
