Professional carpet cleaning is safe for pets and babies when the right chemistry is used and the carpet is allowed to dry before they are back on it. The two things that matter are the products and the residue: cleaning solutions should be pet- and infant-safe, and the process should rinse the chemistry out of the pile rather than leaving a residue behind. All of our solutions are pet- and infant-safe, and the clean finishes with a hypoallergenic rinse that removes the cleaning chemistry. The simple rule is: keep pets and children off the carpet until it is fully dry.
The two questions that actually matter
- Is the product safe? The solutions used should be chosen to be safe around infants and animals. Ours are, throughout the clean.
- Is the residue removed? Even a safe product is better off the carpet than on it. A hypoallergenic rinse lifts the cleaning chemistry out of the pile so a crawling baby or a pet is not in contact with it. Residue-free is the goal.
Keep them off until it is dry
The one instruction to follow is to keep pets and children off the carpet while it dries, typically 2 to 6 hours with good airflow, see how long carpet takes to dry. Damp carpet is simply better left undisturbed, and any treatment is at its most inert once fully dry. If fabric protection has been applied, allow the full 24-hour curing window before normal use.
What to be careful with if you clean yourself
Several common DIY ingredients are not as safe as they seem around pets and small children:
- Essential oils, popular in homemade carpet powders, several are toxic to cats and dogs.
- Ammonia and strong disinfectants, harsh to breathe at floor level and, with ammonia, a trigger for pets to re-mark.
- Residue from supermarket shampoos, left in the pile, it is both a re-soiling problem and something a baby is in contact with.
- Strong fragrances, what smells fresh to you can irritate sensitive airways at floor level.
If in doubt, less is more: blot spills with water, use minimal product, and rinse well.
Common questions
Is professional carpet cleaning safe for pets and babies?
Yes, when pet- and infant-safe solutions are used and the chemistry is rinsed out of the pile, which is how we work. The main precaution is to keep pets and children off the carpet until it is fully dry, usually 2 to 6 hours. Once dry, a properly rinsed carpet is safe for crawling babies and animals.
How long should I keep my baby or pet off the carpet after cleaning?
Until it is completely dry, typically 2 to 6 hours depending on airflow and humidity. If a fabric protector has also been applied, allow the full 24-hour curing period before normal use, after which it is inert and odourless.
Are homemade carpet cleaners safe for pets?
Not always. Several essential oils used in homemade carpet powders are toxic to cats and dogs, and ammonia and strong disinfectants are harsh at floor level. If you clean yourself, avoid those, use minimal product, and rinse well so no residue is left for a pet or child to contact.
